Thanks, Paul. I appreciate your complimentary words. My personal statement in my site concludes, "Paint it like you meant it." I feel your commitment to "paint as you meant it" is genuine; I enjoy the oft-executed somber mood conveyed in your images, and the puzzle that seems to go on with perspective and multiple view points. As I have said, the arrangement of forms and overlay of viewpoints creates a tension that teases but does not frustrate the eye--one is urged to "figure out" just where these images fit. This ingredient is often fundamental to my work: an intertwining of images and tactile spatial elements. I will keep looking; your work brings the viewer back for multiple return visits. Is this not, in fact, that which defines greatness?

Paul Hilario replied:

Hi Ken. Your analysis of my work and why you are drawn to them gives a great measure of affirmation that I may be doing it right somehow. In this site, nobody has bought any of my works similar to DeBurol (A play of the words Debut and Burol [Wake]) as prints. Most of those I sold are prints of my early style and impressionist pieces. It is refreshing to know that as my art matures, it does so with people still able to appreciate it even if at first it is myself that I really only want to please. I live in Third World Philippines and the market dictates a positive vibe as painting themes. Although I paint those too, I am also happy painting the somber side of the coin. With regards to your question of greatness, I think that is something very far from my mind and I am still in the infancy of my journey in art. There are many miles still to go but I am excited where my art will go and where it takes me if it does. Salamat Ken.

My commentary is applicable to your work in general, and to just this single image: The deliberately unsettled spatial relationships of forms and perspective psychologically upset balance, a dislodging of forms and logic that is contrary to the dry, crystal-clear handling of paint, color, and composition. The tension you create, fueled by the personal symbolism, is a refreshing artistic statement, which often is lacking in so much representational painting. I applaud your work. I see your achievements reaching a level of sophistication that I seldom see in this web site. Keep it up! Best to you...Ken Agnello

Paul Hilario replied:

Hi Ken. Much gratitude for your words - perhaps the most descriptive and eloquently stated that I have received yet. Your keen eye have broken down how and what it is that I do. I am extremely glad that you have appreciated my visual narratives. These are not as easily appreciated by most. It takes a different set of eyes and heart that is complemented with a more refined and analytical mind to understand what I do. Again, thanks for your superlative words. I've seen your work and marvel at the expressiveness, scale (!), and diversity of what you do. Congratulations to you too!

Powerful piece. Love all the symbolism. This is well done. FV

Paul Hilario replied:

Thanks Ronda for your comment :-) I am pleased you like the painting and what it stands for.

I purchased the shaggy angora goat on the wood mount for a gift for my neice. Loved how the wood grain comes through on the print. Excellent purchase! Would definitely purchase again.

This looks gorgeous printed on wood. It is now hanging on my therapy office wall and is perfect. The color is true to the photo. I love it.

Artist's Description

DeBurol is a playful visual narrative of a debutant whose untimely death fell on her natal day. A day of supposed celebration turns into a day for mourning.

In Philippine mourning and burial customs, events & activities are ripe with, if you think about it, some sort of celebratory air.

Food, music, flowers, balloons, and even gambling are almost always part of the occasion. Lately, karaoke machines have turned up in places of mourning. This I hope doesn't get popular else we might hear someone singing Michael Jackson's "Thriller" or worse, Lisa Loeb's "Wake Up Song" one of these days.

About Paul Hilario

Paul Hilario

I paint visual narratives. I try to create stories with themes that range from the blissful to the brooding. Typically, my compositions are laden with common and personal symbolism. My works seem to have disconnected elements but they are in fact linked in the way that I see them. To the audience, however, they are like puzzles; open to varied personal interpretations. I don’t like to confine myself in a box. Some days I paint social commentaries. Other days I just paint my personal observations of issues that pertain to almost anything under the sun - this can be political, social, environmental, religious, cultural, and even agricultural. I try to paint realities in, out, and of life. Early in my career as a painter, I was mostly...
